What is Mana War?

Mana War is a deck of 50 cards with 5 different types of "mana". The deck is intended to be a big game in a small box. With these 50 cards, players can play any number of games, or make up their own. Unlike a traditional deck of cards, there are no numbers or values, just suits. This results in games that are very easy to learn, but challenging in their simplicity.

Game Rules

  • Mana Lord 4-6

Game Setup ▶  How to play

Shuffle the deck. Deal one card to each player.

    Rules

The player who dealt goes first. On your turn you must do 2 things, in either order: Guess a players card, and look at a players card. You must choose 2 different players. If you guess correctly, you keep their card and they draw a new one. If the card you look at is the same as yours, both cards are discarded. You may collect multiples of the same mana type. Turn order goes around the circle.

    Objective

Be the first player to collect at least one of each mana type.

    Drinking Rules

If someone guesses your card, take a drink.
Whenever 2 cards are discarded, everyone drinks.

  • Mana Grid 1

    Game Setup Play Online!

Shuffle the deck. Deal a 4x4 grid of face-up cards off the top of the deck.

For easy mode, deal a 3x3 grid instead.

    Rules

Draw one card at a time and place it on top of another card in the grid. You may not place it over top a card with the same symbol.

    Objective

Win the game by completing every column, row, and both diagonals with no repeating symbols. If you run out of cards in the deck, you lose the game.

  • Mana War 2

Game Setup ▶  How to play

Shuffle the deck. Put the top 5 cards of the deck face up in a horizontal line between the players and place the rest of the deck at one end. Each player gets 4 cards.

    Rules

On your turn, draw a card. Then, starting with the card closest to the deck, lay down a card below it from your hand that matches. If you can’t, play any card face down instead. Trade 3 different cards, or 2 of the same from your hand to draw a new card. Do this until 3 rows have been made.

    Objective

Have the fewest face-down cards + cards in your hand at the end of the game.

  • Tug-O-Mana-War 2-10

Game Setup ▶  How to play

Shuffle the deck. Deal 2 rows of 4 cards on the table plus one card on either end to create a long oval shape. Find a token and place it in the middle of the oval.

    Rules

Split into 2 teams on either side of the table. Take turns drawing a card from the top of the deck. You may move the token to an adjacent or diagonal space if it matches that card. If you can’t move the token, replace any other card on the table with the one which was just drawn.

If the deck has no cards left, shuffle the used cards from both teams together to make a new deck.

For a 4-player variant, add an additional 2 + 1 card triangle above and below the middle of the 4x2 rows. Each of the 4 players then try to move the token to the card closest to where they are sitting.

    Objective

Move the token all the way to the left-most card to be the winning team.

If you can't match the card, you must draw one instead and your turn is over. You may also play 2 of the same cards to reverse the turn order, or 3 of the same cards to play "wild" and select a new color for the next person to have to match.

    Objective

Be the first player to get rid of all their cards.
